    This is the official website of the American Dental Association. The ADA is the professional association of dentists committed to the public’s oral health, ethics, science and professional development. The website contains a wealth of information about dental care as well as animation and games. It also includes information in Spanish.
     

  • Virginia Department of Health Division of Dental Health: www.vahealth.org/teeth

    This website contains information about services for children through local health departments. Some of these locations may also offer limited adult care. The website has information about school programs and maternal and early childhood oral health.
     

  • American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry: www.aapd.org

    The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry is the membership organization representing the specialty of pediatric dentistry. This website contains information about pediatric dentistry and also has information for parents.
     

  • Academy of General Dentistry: www.agd.org

    The Academy of General Dentistry advances the practice of general dentistry. The website includes a section on consumer information. This section offers a monthly newsletter, an e-newsletter, and the opportunity to ask an online question about dentistry.
     

  • American Academy of Pediatrics: www.aap.org

    The American Academy of Pediatrics is dedicated to the health of all children. This website contains a wealth of information related to children’s health, including dental health.

  • National Museum of Dentistry: www.dentalmuseum.umaryland.edu

    Did George Washington really have wooden dentures? The National Museum of Dentistry provides this answer as well as lots of other information about the rich history of dentistry. A Smithsonian Affiliate, the museum inspires people to make healthy choices about oral health with a variety of learning opportunities.
     

  • Virginia Dental Association: www.vadental.org

    The Virginia Dental Association (VDA) is a non-profit organization whose vision is to continually improve the quality of dental education and treatment within the state of Virginia.
     

  • Children’s Dental Health Project: www.cdhp.org

    The Children's Dental Health Project advances policies that improve children's access to oral health. This website contains advocacy information as well as policy research.
     

  • Hispanic Dental Association: www.hdassoc.org

    The Hispanic Dental Association is a national organization of dental professionals dedicated to promoting and improving the oral health of the Hispanic community and providing advocacy for Hispanic oral health professionals across the United States.
     

  • HIVDent: www.HIVdent.org

    HIVDent is a nonprofit coalition of health care professionals committed to assuring access to high quality oral health care services for adults, adolescents, and children living with HIV disease.
     

Information about children’s nutrition and diet:

  • American Dietetic Association: www.eatright.com

    American Dietetic Association has a Food and Nutrition Section with informative nutrition fact sheets. There is a whole section on Kids Nutrition Needs as well as one titled Nutrition for Everyone.
     

  • Nutrition for Kids: www.nutritionforkids.com

    This website has lots of resources for good nutrition, including an on-line newsletter called Feeding Kids. There is also a section titled Just For Kids, with kid-friendly activities, ideas, and recipes.

    This website has lots of good information for young children. It includes portion suggestions, cost-saving measures, and ways to get children involved.
     

Information about eligibility and enrollment in FAMIS and Medicaid:

  • Family Access to Medical Insurance Security plan (FAMIS): www.famis.org

    This site has information about the state-sponsored Smiles for Children program. It contains information about applying for FAMIS, including by phone and online.
     

  • Virginia Department of Social Services: http://dssiad.dss.state.va.us/EligibilityScreening

    This website has a preliminary screening for financial assistance programs administered by VDSS. Enrollment typically means visiting a local social services’ office. For a listing of local departments of social services, visit www.dss.virginia.gov/localagency. These departments can help someone enroll in Medicaid and FAMIS as well as other benefit programs.
     

Information about other health care resources in Virginia:

  • Virginia Primary Care Association: www.vpca.com

    The Virginia Primary Care Association website includes listings of community health centers, migrant health centers, and health care for the homeless programs throughout the state of Virginia. These centers vary by location and typically work on a sliding-fee scale. Some centers offer dental care as well as health care.
     

  • Virginia Association of Free Clinics: www.vafreeclinics.org

    The Virginia Association of Free Clinics website contains listing of free clinics around the state. These clinics vary by locality, with most providing health care to the uninsured. Some free clinics also provide dental care.
